Seorae Korean Charcoal BBQ Plaza S Vs JEM - Meat meant for Royalty,Cheesy dip and OMG soft eggs!

Seorae Korean Charcoal BBQ sets itself apart from the rest of the Korean BBQ restaurants by serving galmaegisal, cheesy dip and OMG soft eggs on grill. It is the first galmaegisal (pork skirt meat) restaurant in Singapore. Galmaegisal was reserved for the Korean royalty. Every pig only yields 250 grams of Galmaegisal. Seorae's first outlet is at Plaza Singapura and it has opened its second outlet in JEM this year. I went to both outlets within a week and how do the both outlets fare against each other?

2-in-1 Jjigae + 3 BBQ Meat, S$98

We ordered 2-in-1 Jjigae with a choice of 3 BBQ meat for S$98. We chose Woosamgyeob (US Beef Shortplate), Premium Pork Belly and Spicy Dakgalbi (Chicken Thigh). We did not choose the famous galmaegisal as we already tried that at the JEM outlet (Scroll down for details.)

Woosamgyeob - US Beef Shortplate
The Woosamgyeob and Spicy Dakgalbi were juicy and delicious. Personally, I felt that the premium pork belly was too oily and fatty for me to enjoy. I love pork belly but this was a bit too much for me. I would highly recommend choosing Galmaegisal (Pork Skirt Meat), Woosamyeob (Beef Shortplate) and Spicy Dakgalbi.

Soft Eggs on Grill
Our set comes with 4 rounds of eggs on grill. The eggs were so soft and delicious. I would advise you to ask for 2 rounds at one go because it is easier to keep track and more to go round.  We had only 3 rounds because the staff were really busy at Plaza Sing.

2-in-1 Jjigae
The 2-in-1 Jjigae was the star of the night for me. We chose Kimchi and Bulgogi broths and both were awesome with rich flavours. The beef slices tasted very yummy with every mouthful of hot broth. We also topped up with Spam (luncheon meat).

We also ordered the Watermelon Soju. I did not enjoy it because it tasted like a bitter watermelon juice. I prefer the Watermelon juice without Soju. It is definitely a Must Try.

Overall, I felt that the food at Plaza Sing was slightly more delicious than the one at JEM because for its side dishes, I really enjoyed the green salad with kimchi sauce which was not served at JEM. The broths were jam packed with flavours and somehow, the Spam luncheon meat was nicer. Even the soft eggs were tastier. The diners at the next table ordered Seafood Pancake and it definitely looked way nicer than the one I had at JEM. The only drawback with regards to eating was that the charcoal grill at Plaza S charred too quickly. The fire was too hot. Otherwise, the kitchen crew at PS did a fantastic job.

BUT, I would definitely choose to patronise the JEM outlet because we experienced strange service at Plaza Sing. Initally, I thought that they were understaffed due to a one-off situation but to my shock, Danielfooddiary and PinkyPiggu also blogged about the service at Plaza Sing.

Queue at Seorae
First of all, look at the queue in the picture. The restaurant was not even full house. I counted and there were 7 big and small empty tables. I am not sure why the customers were left queuing and not seated.

We wanted to order luncheon meat for our Jjigae from one of the serving staff. She insisted that the restaurant did not serve luncheon meat. Baffled, we pressed on and she revealed that what we wanted to order was Spam and not luncheon meat. I want to borrow Daniel's words - Oh my Tian!

As the grill was completely charred and it was impossible to cook any decent meat, we requested one of the staff to change the grill, top up the lettuce for wrapping the BBQ meat and one more round of eggs on grill. She gave a face and I was not sure why. She ignored all our requests and we were left waiting.

Since we could not grill, we decided to continue to eat our Jjigae. After a while, a man clad in a shirt walked past and Duckie told him NICELY that we had told his staff quite a while ago about our requests. To our shock, he SNAPPED and replied, "Staff? I don't have staff! Two of them went home!" He then walked away. To our relief, he changed our grill and topped up the eggs. As for the vegetables, I decided to walk up to the kitchen counter and helped myself. To my surprise, the kitchen crew had already prepared trays and trays of vegetables for the serving crew.

Although the food was delicious, the weird service left a bitter aftertaste. Seorae at JEM, on the other hand, provided impeccable service.

Galmaegisal (Pork Skirt Meat)
The galmaegisal was very tender and sweet but without the unhealthy fats and this is also why it is that special. If you are a pork lover, you should give it a go.

Watermelon juice

Pineapple juice
You must try their juices. Refreshing and perfect for BBQ. If you have to choose one, I prefer the watermelon juice to the pineapple. The pineapple juice reminded me of pineapple fruit punch whereas the watermelon drink had an interesting and refreshing twist to it.

Seorae Samgyeobsal (pork belly), Jinkkgotsal (Wagyu beef)

The Seorae Samgyeobsal is pork belly cut in a special fan way. The Wagyu beef was very delicious.

Self-service Station
I really enjoyed the self-service station at JEM's outlet. There was no need to keep asking the staff to top up and I could help myself to whatever side dishes I wanted.

Salad with Black Sesame dressing
The Salad with Black Sesame dressing was available at JEM but not at the outlet in Plaza S. It tasted very unique.

Soft eggs on grill

Seafood Pancake
The Seafood Pancake was not crispy and it tasted very average. If they do not improve it, you can skip this unless you have a serious craving and this would do.
Delicious Army Stew

I enjoyed my dining experience at Seorae (JEM) more than Plaza Singapura. If you plan to dine at Seorae, I recommend ordering the 2-in-1 Jjigae with 3 BBQ meats which comes with 4 rounds of eggs on grill. Top up the set with additional cheese and Spam. Be prepared to spend around S$40 per pax.
